Herbert von Karajan, the great conductor of the 20th century, reigned supreme in the classical music world with his outstanding musicianship and charisma. From the "Karajan's Legacy" series, which Karajan worked on energetically during the last years of his life in the 1980s, we present "The Knight of Roses," a masterpiece opera by R. Strauss that was performed at the Salzburg Festival in 1984. Karajan's "Der Rosenkavalier" was performed at the Salzburg Festival in 1960, and a documentary film of the performance has been preserved on film. After almost a quarter of a century, the orchestra has once again tackled this large-scale work, beautifully depicting the world of R. Strauss-Hoffmanstahl with a richness that only a mature conductor can achieve, and with an aesthetic sound to the fullest extent. (C)RS
