American pianist and musicologist Charles Rosen, in his 1971 book "The Classical Style," described Haydn's late piano trios as "the most brilliant piano works before Beethoven," along with Mozart's piano concertos, in terms of their subtlety, depth of expression, and virtuosity. Indeed, from 1785 onward, Haydn succeeded in creating an improvisatory atmosphere rarely found in piano sonatas or other works, through the combination of three instruments and unusual tonalities.
