Despite their in the meantime advanced age of over 20 years, Lufthansa is still holding on to its remaining A340s of the 300 series for a few years more. The combination of high reliability, small size and long range makes the four-engine widebody interesting for some long-haul routes, on which other, larger aircraft in the fleet are too large. 15 aircraft are currently in service to destinations around the globe, four of which advertise Star Alliance, the airline alliance founded in 1997 and today comprising 26 airlines from all over the world.
