Homilius (1714-1785)
Description:
Gottfried Homilius, a German Baroque composer, studied under J.S. Bach and became organist at the Church of Our Lady of Dresden in 1742; from 1755 to his death, he was music director at three churches in Leipzig, including the cantor of the Dresden Cross Church, and composed numerous church music, He composed a great deal of church music and was widely respected. This album contains the world premiere of his four cantatas for "Christmas and Advent". The early classical Gallant style is already evident in the treatment of the songs, which are not polyphonic (counterpoint) but often in a homophonic form, with separate melody and accompaniment. The naturalness and power of expression are also full marks. In addition to the passionate singing of the soloists, the austere sound of the Cologne Academy, conducted by Virens, is also a must-hear.
