Additional Details: Original French WWI propaganda poster titled La Marseillaise, designed by celebrated French poster artist Jacques Carlu during the final years of the First World War. Created as both a patriotic and motivational image, the poster references France’s national anthem, originally composed in Strasbourg in 1792, while linking the spirit of the French Revolution to the Allied victory of 1918.
The dramatic composition depicts a heroic revolutionary figure charging forward beneath clouds of smoke while soldiers rally in the background beneath the French tricolor. Accompanied by the stirring words “Allons donc enfants de la Patrie…”, the image powerfully captures the emotional intensity and national pride that defined wartime French propaganda.
During WWI, posters such as this were essential tools used to inspire patriotism, encourage military enlistment, promote sacrifice, and rally public support for the war effort through fundraising and war bond campaigns. Today, these authentic wartime lithographs are prized not only for their historical importance, but also for their striking graphic design and emotional impact.
This original vintage lithograph measures 49 x 33 1/2 inches and has been professionally museum mounted on linen for long-term preservation, a standard conservation practice for important early posters. Strong imagery, historical significance, and impressive scale make this an exceptional example of early twentieth-century French graphic art from the pre-digital poster era.
