First displayed in May 1935, Montreal based its flag on the city's coat of arms. It consists of a red symmetric cross with four emblems representing the four main European ethnic groups that were settled in the city in the 19th century.

The flag was modified in 2017 to include the ancestral and continual presence of Indigenous peoples. The symbol - a white pine - was chosen by the First Nations communities of Montreal.
