He was a founding member of the Bulgarian Society of Contemporary Musicians (the predecessor of the Bulgarian Composers' Union). He gained great fame between the two world wars, and many of his works have been performed not only in Europe but also in the United States. The three works on this album all have the mission of bringing the music of his native Bulgaria to international attention. Each piece incorporates exotic folk material into a classically inspired style, resulting in a work that is both enjoyable and lively. The "Bulgarian Rhapsody" is so familiar that it has been called the "Bulgarian Chopin's Polonaise in A major. Todorov, who specializes in ballet music, gives a powerful performance that enhances the work. Naxos Japan
