Donizetti (1797-1848)

Description:

Recorded to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Opera Rara. Donizetti's troubled opera "The Hereditary Aristocrat" was his 13th opera and his first as music director of the Royal Theatre of San Carlo in Naples. The hereditary nobility are the lowest class of Dalits, who are not even included in the caste system of Hinduism in India, and have suffered very severe discrimination up to the present day. The opera, based on the tragic play "Le Pariah" (1821) by French writer Casimir Dravigne, which covers this, and a script by Domenico Giardoni, deals with religious intolerance (a clash between Brahmins and an undesirable caste known as Pariah). Performing this work was the most important event in Donizetti's career, and its premiere at the Royal Gala Night in San Carlo was an opera to which he gave special attention. However, this performance could not achieve success due to its own problem: "No one is allowed to praise it until the King has praised it.Donizetti, however, was so proud of the work that he adapted it for many of his later operas, including his operas Torquato Tussauds, The Wonderful Medicine of Love, and The Duke of Alba. Opera Rara was founded as a foundation to rediscover, restore, document, and perform the lost operatic legacy of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and will celebrate exactly 50 years in 2020. It seeks out neglected operatic masterpieces, brings them back to life for the enjoyment of modern audiences, and works with the best singers, conductors, orchestras, and musicologists to lead the way in expanding the repertoire as the leading edge of the opera world, encouraging other opera professionals and lovers to explore new and unknown operatic gems. His 2018 Rossini: Semillermide (complete version) and 2019 Donizetti: Angel of Nisida and Puccini: Les Willis have received numerous awards for their internationally acclaimed productions. Especially for Donizetti, the orchestra has performed and recorded many of his works.This performance was session-recorded in the BBC studios prior to the 2019 performance at the Barbican Center by soprano Albina Shagimuratova, who has received rave reviews at the Met, Milan, and Vienna operas, and the Salzburg Festival since her debut at the Royal Opera in 2013. Tenor René Barbera, a regular at the Rossini Opera Festival, who brought his beautiful voice and technique to "The Barber of Seville" at the New National Opera in 2019. Other singers of great ability who are regulars at the Royal Opera are also featured, and Elder's knowledgeable conducting of Donizetti's works conveys the full appeal of this dramatic work.
