Beethoven (1770-1827)
Description:
Furtwängler & Berlin Philharmonic, Gluck: "Alceste" Overture (1951) + Beethoven: "Heroes" (1950) 2-track, 38 cm, open-reel tape reissue series ■From the producer The overture to "Alceste" was performed live at the opening of the Schiller Theater in Berlin (a photo of the overture from that day appears in the commentary), and "Hero" was also performed live at the Titania Palast in June 1950. The Berliner Philharmoniker's "Heroes" tends to attract more attention because there are two different live performances of the December 1952 concert. However, in terms of overall sound quality, including dynamic range, the 1950 recording is superior to the two 1952 recordings, and perhaps the 1950 recording is the best of the three. Regardless of superiority or inferiority, both "Alceste" and "Hero" allow us to touch the essence of Furtwängler & the Berlin Philharmonic. (Naoya Hirabayashi) King International
