Julian Rage, one of the most gifted guitarists of contemporary jazz, and Bill Frisell as guests on his second new Blue Note album! Julian Rage is one of the leading guitarists of contemporary jazz. He has performed with many jazz legends such as Gary Burton and Charles Lloyd, and has been praised by the New York Times as a "natural talent. This album contains 10 original songs. As on the previous album, the trio consists of bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, but this time Bill Frisell also joins the band for seven songs. The two have performed together in a variety of contexts, including duo concerts and projects conceived by John Zorn, but this time they are working together as a quartet, which brings Julien's vision for the album into sharper focus. About this album, Julien says, "I've wanted to make this album for years. It was born out of a musical question: is it possible to have a gorgeous orchestration that combines organic improvisation with the agility of a small ensemble?The answer lies in the electric guitar, which is very important to me. The sound of the electric guitar can be beautiful, sharp, understated, warm, and hard. I wanted to explore that in depth when I thought about the orchestration of this album. As for Bill Frisell, who played on seven of the songs, "He's kind of the sound of the orchestra himself. When we talked about the record, Bill immediately said, 'Yeah, I get it. I know what you want to pop and I know that it represents the jazz guitar lineage. Bill is very sensitive to the nuances of the guitar sound, so it was fun to talk about it with him.
