When Nick Cave decided to start the new decade with an album largely made up of acoustic and piano ballads, there was a predictable outcry from the so-called "purists". "Purist" usually translates as "person who wants their favourite artist to continue making music in the exact same style as their debut for the rest of their career", although ironically they are usually also the first people to shout "creatively bankrupt" in these cases. With the benefit of hindsight, The Good Son has received the appreciation it deserves but in 1990 jaws dropped at its move away from the sound of the early Bad Seeds albums. In actual fact, anyone who was listening to these albums could have seen it coming a mile off. Many of the best songs on the last few albums had been ballads and Cave had shown a love for showmanship and sentiment since his debut cover of "In the Ghetto".
