Description:

Roussel (1869-1937) was an important French composer who progressed from Impressionism to Neoclassicism. Although he is best known for his profound orchestral works, his piano music is full of a unique atmosphere and an indescribable charm. The works in this second collection are also quite interesting. The prelude "Resurrection," inspired by Tolstoy's work of the same name, is a profound piece of music that seems to describe the pain in the heart of the protagonist, and only at the end of the piece does one find a glimmer of hope. The "Wildness" reflects Roussel's love of nature. It has a whimsical and supple expression. The "Suite" has a baroque structure, but again, the music itself is austere. The darkness of the "Prelude," written in memory of a sailor who lost his life in a storm, the hazy "Sicilienne," and the slightly lighthearted "Boulez" and "Rondo" make this a hard work to eat.The unpublished work from his student days, "Fugue," and the equally young "Time is Passing," are somewhat more refined works.
