Maris Kupčs, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra
Description:
Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, composer Burg has lived in Finland since 1974. Although he is known exclusively as a "tango" composer, his most important works are his 18 symphonies, works based on Jewish themes, and works inspired by the myth of Karelia, the Finnish mythology that is his second home. The album includes two symphonies. Symphony No. 17, "To the Joy of Life," with piano, is an autobiographical work about a man who overcame repeated obstacles, and its lively final movement is a triumph. Symphony No. 18, whose motif is a Latvian Jewish folk song, was written in honor of his grandparents, who were expelled from their home in Latvia. The final movement in variation form is full of mystical beauty. Naxos Japan
