Thomas Beecham was "a sergeant in a British pharmaceutical company" and was called "a famous man in the British musical world" who founded two orchestras, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with his own private fortune. His repertoire was wide-ranging, and he is especially known for his efforts to promote the works of British composers. This live recording includes works by eight composers from Haydn to Wagner, including symphonies by Beethoven and Brahms, whom he is said to have disliked (Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 is a different version from the performance released on the BBC LEGENDS label). version of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2.)
