Violinist Ingolf Turban has made a valuable, momentous «rediscovery»: the compositions for violin by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1814–1865), the German «Paganini». Contemporary opinion held Ernst to be the only violinist who could match, perhaps even surpass, Paganini’s mastery of the violin. But Ernst was much more than merely an instrumental virtuoso, he wasn’t merely a Paganini mimic; Ernst was an innovative and profound composer.

Each of his works is characterized by an inner magic and outer beauty. Berlioz considered his works to be superior even to Chopin’s compositions.
