Description:
Mercadante contributed greatly to the development of Italian opera in the 19th century. Although he spent most of his life composing operas, during the six years from 1814 to 1820 he wrote numerous instrumental works, mostly flute pieces, inspired by his fellow conservatory students and his teacher. Although most of his operas were considered "out of date" and largely forgotten due to the rise of Verdi's works, his instrumental works have survived and are often performed even today. The flute concertos, in particular, all use highly challenging techniques and beautiful, flowing melodies, and are as good as Paganini's violin concertos. As in the first collection (8.572731), Patrick Gallois blows, and Kazunori Seo joins him for the two flute concertos, giving brilliant performances. Naxos Japan
