The 2001 M. Chapoutier Le Pavillon Ermitage is sourced from 4 hectares of 65-year-old vines on granitic soils in the Les Bessards lieu-dit of Hermitage. Earning 97 points from Matt Walls (Decanter), 95 points each from Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) and Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front), and 17/20 from Julia Harding MW (jancisrobinson.com), it is a wine of tremendous intensity built for the long term.
Mature now, showing a very gamey character on the nose along with leaf mulch and cigar tobacco. Still very full and richly fruited on the palate, with a saline, searching finish of good length. Very Hermitage, and full of interest. - Matt Walls, Decanter (97 pts)
Julia Harding MW awarded 17/20: surprisingly delicate perfume, fragrant yet still pretty firm, dryish finish.
