The Adept Armor Novasteel Breastplate is a structural steel torso armor system rated to Level IIIA against handgun threats, Knife-3 and Spike-3 edged and spiked weapon threats, and blunt impacts well beyond 100 J — all in a single rigid shell under 0.1 inches thick. Two integrated bolt points accept purpose-built RF1 up-armor plates (sold separately), extending protection to rifle-level threats without replacing the base system. Available in size M (9 lbs, 13.8 x 12.5 in.) and L/XL (9.8 lbs, 13.8 x 17 in.), in Black or Green, for chest circumferences from 35 to 47.5 inches.
The NovaSteel Breastplate is constructed entirely from a proprietary NovaSteel alloy, which combines outstanding tensile strength and ballistic performance with formability. At under 0.1 inches thick, it is the thinnest Level IIIA armor currently produced. Backface deformation against common handgun threats — including 9mm FMJ — averages less than 10 mm, well inside NIJ limits.
The breastplate resists handgun threats to Level IIIA, knives to well beyond the Knife-3 standard, spikes to well beyond the Spike-3 standard, and blunt impacts to well beyond 100 J. A published test report covers a .44 Magnum 240-grain SJHP at the NIJ-required 1,430 ± 30 ft/s. When fitted with the optional RF1 up-armor plates, the system adds rifle-level protection equivalent to NIJ Level III / RF1 threats.
Standard riot armor — functionally equivalent to football or motocross protective gear — addresses blunt impact only. Officers who need broader coverage typically layer soft armor beneath it, adding thermal load, weight, and a logistical burden, while still leaving gaps in knife and spike protection. The Novasteel Breastplate eliminates all three of those gaps in a single shell that drops in as a direct replacement for conventional riot torso protectors.
| Round | Grain | Required Velocity | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| .44 Magnum SJHP | 240 gr | 1,430 ± 30 ft/s | Defeated |
The breastplate functions as a first-in-class rigid plate carrier with an integrated bolt-attachment system. Two bolt points per up-armor plate are pre-engineered into the shell; attachment requires only the two included bolts per plate and no special tools or training. Only the purpose-built RF1 up-armor plates (sold separately as a set of two for $650) are compatible — the attachment system and plate geometry are matched specifically to this breastplate and do not accept third-party inserts.
RF1 up-armor plates weigh 1.7 lbs each. RF2-rated up-armor plates are in development. The breastplate can also be fitted with MOLLE placards for overt use as a structural plate carrier when mission requirements call for a more conventional loadout.
The ballistic performance of the system is guaranteed for fifteen years. The straps are replaceable and carry a five-year guarantee. The NovaSteel alloy coating prevents rust. Performance is not affected by reasonable temperature extremes or humidity. In very cold climates, wear the breastplate over clothing rather than directly against bare skin.
Sizing is based on chest circumference measured at its widest point. Size M fits chests from 89–100 cm (35–39.5 in.); size L/XL fits 101–120 cm (40–47.5 in.). The breastplate ships as a standalone torso protector. Shoulder armor plates ($245, sold separately) and RF1 up-armor plates ($650, sold separately) ship on longer lead times. MOLLE placards are available separately for users who want a conventional plate-carrier interface. Contact us if you need help selecting the right size or accessory configuration.
In its base configuration, the breastplate stops handgun threats to Level IIIA — including .44 Magnum 240-grain SJHP at 1,430 ft/s, which is the most demanding NIJ IIIA handgun test round. It also exceeds the Knife-3 and Spike-3 edged-weapon standards and blunt impacts beyond 100 J. With the optional RF1 up-armor plates bolted in, it additionally handles Level III / RF1 rifle threats.
The base breastplate provides Level IIIA, Knife-3+, Spike-3+, and 100 J+ blunt protection with no additional hardware. Adding the two RF1 up-armor plates (bolted to the inside of the breastplate with the included bolts) extends coverage to rifle threats at Level III / RF1. The up-armor plates weigh 1.7 lbs each and the upgrade takes only a few minutes with no special tools.
No. Only the purpose-built Adept Armor RF1 up-armor plates are compatible. The attachment system and plate geometry are engineered specifically for this breastplate and do not accommodate other inserts.
Standard riot armor is rated for blunt impact only — comparable to motocross or football protective gear. It offers no ballistic or edged-weapon protection. Officers needing that coverage typically layer soft armor panels underneath, adding heat, weight, and logistics complexity while still leaving knife gaps. The Novasteel Breastplate replaces all of that with a single shell that covers the full threat spectrum.
The ballistic performance of the system is guaranteed for fifteen years. The straps carry a five-year guarantee and are user-replaceable. The NovaSteel alloy coating prevents corrosion, and performance holds across reasonable temperature and humidity extremes.
It cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut due to state body armor restrictions, and is subject to US export regulations. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
