The Ford Cortina GT500 was released in July 1965 and was always a rarity on the roads as only 112 were produced. Unique to Australia, the GT500 was the car that Ford wanted to take victory at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit. They achieved their desired result in the 1965 Armstrong 500, with Cortina GT500s finishing 1-2 in Class D and 1-2 outright.
The Fairfield Motors 11D entrant of Barry Seton and Midge Bosworth took the top step of the podium, whilst the Grawill Motors 4D entrant of Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland took second. The success of the GT500 led to eligibility rule changes for next year’s 1966 Gallaher 500.
