Description:
Born in London in 1924, Dodgson was drafted into the Royal Navy in 1942 at the age of 18 and served for four years. He then studied composition and music theory at the Royal Academy of Music and began his career as a composer in 1950. A charismatic personality, he connected with numerous players and organizations, wrote music for various documentaries, and did freelance reviews for BBC broadcasts, among other diverse activities. The album features Dodgson's works from various periods. Although friend and recorder player John Turner has said that Dodgson's works are "tonal rather than melodic," the early works are very listenable music with beautiful, lively melodies. The "Partita for Solo Cello," written more than 30 years later, is a crystallization of his exploration of compositional technique, and is an interesting piece in which a single theme is transformed from moment to moment.
