West Park 1950 is a vivid modernist cityscape by acclaimed German painter Max Beckmann — one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. This 1963 offset lithograph reproduction, published in Munich, captures Beckmann’s expressive linework, bold color blocking, and surreal blend of architecture and park life with striking precision.
Originally painted near the end of Beckmann’s life, West Park reflects the tension and beauty of postwar Europe — a world of fountains, fencing, and figures that feel both structured and dreamlike. Though the work was created after Beckmann left Germany, his artistic vision remained deeply rooted in German visual culture. Born in Leipzig in 1884, Beckmann taught in Frankfurt before fleeing the Nazi regime, eventually settling in the U.S. Despite his exile, his work has long been celebrated as central to German Expressionism and New Objectivity.
