Description:
Born near Milan, Italy, Cantelli was a piano prodigy from an early age. After the end of World War II, he conducted a succession of orchestras, beginning with La Scala in Milan, and was regarded as "Toscanini's successor. In November 1956, just as he was finally nominated to succeed de Sabata as music director of La Scala, Cantelli died in a plane crash on November 24 at the age of 36. The recording was made in 1953 by the Philharmonic Orchestra. This recording was made in 1953, when he was a guest with the Philharmonia Orchestra. This performance was highly acclaimed for its restrained interpretation and beautiful sound of woodwinds and other instruments. All of the pieces performed here are favorites of Cantelli's, among which Brahms' symphonies were performed 46 times during his short life, and Rossini's overture to "Semillermede" was recorded as having been performed 38 times.
