A striking 1940s George III style dresser finished in richly figured flamed mahogany. This well-built piece features three deep drawers with the original ornate brass hardware and is believed to date to 1943 based on rear numbering. Measuring 49” W x 21” D x 35.25” H, it’s both functional and elegant.
Condition is very good, with light scuffing and scratching mostly to the top surface along with a few small touch-ups, all consistent with age and use. Sturdy, solid, and beautifully proportioned, it’s a timeless addition to any room.
History of the New York Furniture Exchange-
This dresser was retailed through the New York Furniture Exchange at 206 Lexington Avenue, a landmark 16-story building completed in 1926 specifically to house the furniture industry. For decades, it served as the premier wholesale mart where leading manufacturers and importers showcased their lines to department stores, decorators, and designers. The Exchange was an essential hub for the American furniture trade before transitioning in the late 1970s into the New York Design Center (NYDC), which continues to operate today as a destination for interior design professionals.
Why We Love It
The flame mahogany grain, original brass pulls, and connection to the storied New York Furniture Exchange make this dresser not only a beautiful storage piece, but also a fascinating link to design history.
