Description:
Benedict, a man who swore he would never marry Beatrice, and Beatrice, a woman who is in love with him but cannot be honest with him. They fight with each other because they are stubborn even though they really like each other. In the summer of 1860, Berlioz was asked by Benazze, the organizer of the Baden-Baden Music Festival, to compose a "short opera". Berlioz decided to adapt Shakespeare's "The Disturbances" into an opera, which he had conceived when he was 30 years old and had left untouched. The work, which took a year and a half to complete, reflects the feelings of resignation and nihilism that Berlioz reached in his later years. In this performance, the 1950s costumes worn by the characters are all designed in gray, a device that reveals a strong sense of loneliness even in the midst of light-hearted exchanges. Naxos Japan
