Flores De Mvsica, the only surviving collection of works by Portuguese Renaissance organist and composer Manuel Rodriguez Coelho, was printed in 1620 and presented to King Filipe III of Spain. It is one of the largest musical works printed in the 17th century. It contains 24 tientos, 101 hymns with organ accompaniment, and other works by Coelho and other composers of the time. Coelho's works are characterized by their clear writing, relatively simple harmonies, and lack of intricate counterpoint, and they are beautifully crafted, reminiscent of the works of Sweelinck's contemporaries. This album, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first publication of the collection, was recorded at Elbas Cathedral, where Coelho was organist before his death, using a new score that incorporates the latest research results. The solo organ pieces are performed on the main organ, and the pieces with singing are performed on the smaller Positif organ. Naxos Japan
