Claudio Santoro left behind a large number of works, 600 in all, including 14 symphonies, one of the most prolific of any Brazilian composer. All of the works on this album were written during Santoro's last decade of life. The Concerto for Ensemble and the "Three Separations on B-A-C-H" were written for student orchestras, a part of the Brazilian musical education he devoted his last years to, and his mastery of stringed instruments makes them full-bodied and resonant works. The world premiere recording of Symphony No. 11 is the most dense and dramatic work on the album, with the treatment of the low strings in the final movement reminiscent of the opening of Brahms' Symphony No. 1. Symphony No. 12 is written in the form of an ensemble concerto for nine soloists and orchestra. The wide range of styles from folkloric music to atonal music using the twelve-tone technique can be seen in these works, which showcase his musical boundaries. (C)RS
