Only 55 Britannia Class (Standard Class 7) locomotives were ever produced, each one of them constructed at the British Railway Crewe Works. The first of these Britannias made its first-ever journey on 11th January 1951 between Crewe and Carlisle, clocking at a maximum speed of 75mph. This 'Robin Hood' locomotive no. 70038 (ST97703) was the 39th Britannia locomotive to roll out of the works on the 29th of January 1953 and spent the first section of its career in East Anglia and North London as it served the East Coast main line. It was eventually sold for scrap in 1968 after spending four years working in Carlisle.
