Bette Smith
Description:
The second from New York soul diva Bette Smith, whose 2017 "Jetlagger" was highly acclaimed! The gospel-trained soulful voice is the real deal. Produced by Matt Patton and Bronson Tew, the rhythm section of the Southern rock band Drive By Truckers (DBT). Guests include North Mississippi's Luther Dickinson, DBT's Patterson Hood, and Jimbo Mathis. The sound is truly reminiscent of the old swamp soul that Aretha Franklin and Bettye Lovett created in Muscle Shoals! Bette Smith was born in Brooklyn, NY, and grew up with gospel and soul music from the age of 5, influenced by her father who was a choir leader, and later began performing locally. She decided to pursue music in earnest when her brother, who always encouraged and helped her, died of kidney failure. He then released his debut album, Jetlagger, in 2017 on Fat Possum-owned Big Legal Female Records, produced by Jimbo Mathis, formerly of Squirel Nut Zippers. The album received rave reviews in many music magazines including NPR, Billboard, and MOJO, and charted at #1 on the Roots Music Report. The band has performed at many festivals including the Montreux Jazz Festival. After that, they continued to tour live energetically, and in May 2020, Cleopatra Records digitally released a cover of Maroon 5's "Memories" in collaboration with The Time's guitarist Jesse Johnson. He then signed with RUF Records and will release this album, his second.
