New recordings by Kremer and others who have had a long and close relationship with Kancheli Georgian-born Giya Kancheli is known for his expression of a singular world among contemporary composers of the 21st century. His music is sometimes meditative and has been compared to Pärt and Tavener, but it is generally introspective rather than religious. His sound, which seems to be drawn from a single-minded effort to face oneself, may resonate with many people. The two works on this album--"Twilight" for two solo violins and string orchestra, and "Chiaroscuro," which takes its title from a painting technique of the Renaissance and Baroque periods--are both world premiere recordings, Kremer, who has had a long and close relationship with Cancelli, and Kopatchinskaja, one of the most attractive and richly musical of the young violinists, will carefully portray this world of Cancelli's. Twilight," which Kancheli wrote while recovering from a long illness and watching the changing appearance of the poplar trees outside his window, and "Chiaroscuro," which expresses the dramatic contrast between light and shadow.
