Description:
Wagner's opera "Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg" is a humorous tale of artisans ostensibly devoted to their craft. Fite Pogner, a goldsmith, promises to marry his daughter Epha to the winner of a singing contest in which three men are deemed worthy participants. At first glance, this story seems to be an innocent comedy of middle-class innocence, but a deeper social insight emerges upon closer inspection. How does society behave toward communal traditions and their breakers? What value does or should society place on art? And to what extent are new attempts and deviations from the norm acceptable? The Bayreuth Festival's 2008 performance of Katharina Wagner's production of Wagner's opera was controversial for its bold and unrestrained direction, but Weigle's command of the entire production, the exhilarating performance, and the wonderful singing of the singers made this a very enjoyable production. The singers' singing allows the audience to fully enjoy this lengthy work without the need for a video. Naxos Japan
