Description:

Joseph Marx is a composer belonging to the late Romantic school. In his later years, he wrote works influenced by French Impressionism, but basically he did not adopt a very avant-garde style. This album contains three works based on the "old-fashioned style" he favored. The "Old Viennese Serenade" is an idyllic piece that brings the characteristics of Austrian music to the forefront, while the "Partita," originally written for string quartet, has an ethnic sound with mixolydian melody. The "Sinfonia," also written for string quartet, has a bright Viennese theme that pays homage to Haydn and Mozart. All are beautiful works that combine romantic sensibility and classical style.
