The Abandoned Didone, a story by the genius scriptwriter Metastasio. Prince Aeneas, born of the Trojan king and the goddess Aphrodite, was defeated in the Trojan War and drifted to Carthage on the North African coast, where he met Didone, the queen. There, the two became lovers, but in order to rebuild Troia, he abandoned her and, after wandering for seven years, arrived in Italy, where he married a princess and laid the foundations of the Roman Empire. Didone, on the other hand, in a fit of grief, threw herself into a blazing fire. The Metastasio script based on this story is said to have been composed by 50 or 100 composers, including Galuppi, Hasse, and Paisiello, which shows how popular it was at the time. One of the most famous tunes was by Leonardo Vinci (1960-1730). Vinci composed the piece in 1724 (first draft disc), and it was the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between Vinci and Metastasio. Handel had helped edit the piece and actually knew it.In 1737, Handel attempted to perform it in London, but due to changes in the story to appeal to London audiences, the selfishness of the singers, and the unavailability of the anonymous libretto that had been changed for that purpose, Handel created the piece to Pasticcio's specifications. It is a collection of 13 arias by Vinci and 9 arias by composers such as Giacomelli, Vivaldi, and Hasse. The Lauten Company, led by lutenist Wolfgang Kachner, is not a period-instrument ensemble, but rather a contemporary revival of music of the period, featuring a wide variety of soloists and performing in a variety of orchestras. The highly convincing and tight ensemble of Kachner and the Lauten Company, flanked by expressive singers, breathes new life into the opera as it is reconstructed. Sony Music
