Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer Daniel Lanois has announced the release of his new album "Player, Piano" on September 23 on Modern Recordings. The album features a series of piano performances on exotic instruments, recorded at Lanois' studio in Toronto with the help of co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz. As one of the most acclaimed and influential producers of our time, Daniel Lanois has worked on iconic albums by artists ranging from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to U2 and Peter Gabriel.A prolific and critically acclaimed songwriter, he has composed music for Oscar-winning films and blockbuster video games, as well as over a dozen genre-defying solo releases. PLAYER, PIANO follows his previous album, HEAVY SUN, released in 2021 to wide acclaim from SPIN, World Cafe, No Depression, American Songwriter, and others, and is his first album for Modern Recordings. This will be the first album on Modern Recordings. To achieve the timeless sound on PLAYER, PIANO, Lanois and Lorenz modified each of the three pianos in the studio, softening the strings with towels and adding small felt pads to the heads to dull the impact of the hammers. For the recordings, he used vintage ribbon microphones and placed them behind rather than in front of the instruments to further soften the sound. When it came to the sound of the album, Lanois explains, "If I was going to make a piano record, I wanted it to sound like recordings from the '40s and '50s, when the piano was delicate and beautiful." He also commented on the album: "I wanted to make it sound like a piano record from the '40s and '50s, when piano was delicate and beautiful.He said, "Making this record carried me through a period of time when I had nowhere else to go." 'I could travel to Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica. I could have gone to see the ghosts of Erik Satie, Oscar Peterson, and Harold Budd. I was able to go back in time to collaborate with Brian Eno, Kate Bush, and Emmylou Harris. All without ever leaving my studio." Each of the songs on PLAYER, PIANO is an entrance, an invitation to take a place and enter a world of imagination and memory.
