He made a big splash with his recording of Telemann's "Fantasia for Solo Viola da Gamba" (OGCD920417), which was rediscovered for the first time in about 280 years, and also attracted attention with his recording using a rare instrument called "viola bastarda" (PGCD922519) (both were "specially selected discs" by Record Art This is the first collection of works by Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) since "Drexel's Manuscripts" (GCD920410), a collection of works for unaccompanied viola da gamba recorded 12 years ago.Abel was renowned throughout Europe as an outstanding viola da gamba virtuoso and composer of his time, and is also known for having co-founded with J.C. Bach the Bach-Abel Concerts, the first reserved season concerts in the history of Western music. Many of the sonatas here for viola da gamba and basso continuo were recently discovered and recorded for the first time in the world. Pandolfo adds brilliant cadenzas and ornamentation to these exciting, technical, colorful, and passionate gamba sonatas. The album title, "Sentimental Journey," was inspired by Abel's contemporary, the painter Thomas Gainsborough, who compared him to the famous novelist Lawrence Sterne of Music in "Tristram Shandy" (He was the Sterne of Music) and Sterne's unfinished novel "France and Sentimental Journey through France and Italy".
