PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) are the forgotten middle child of the chemical exfoliant family. AHAs exfoliate aggressively. BHAs work deeper in pores. PHAs sit at a molecular weight large enough that they stay on the skin's surface, delivering mild exfoliation without the stinging, flaking, or sun sensitivity that scares users away from AHAs. For reactive skin or users new to acids, PHA is the entry point.
AXIS-Y's PHA Resurfacing Glow Peel is positioned as a gentle weekly or biweekly peel that refines texture, fades post-acne marks, and adds dewy glow without risking irritation. The formula combines gluconolactone (the main PHA) with niacinamide, centella asiatica, and hyaluronic acid for calming hydration during the peel window. Unlike aggressive at-home peels, you don't need to neutralize or rinse this quickly.
Gluconolactone breaks up dead skin cell adhesions on the surface, allowing them to shed and revealing fresher skin beneath. Because the molecule is larger than glycolic or lactic acid, it stays near the surface and works more gently. Niacinamide supports tone correction and reduces post-inflammatory marks. Centella calms during the peel window. End result: smoother texture, more even tone, visible dewy finish.
After cleansing and toner, apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water. Follow with serum and cream. Use 1 to 2 times per week. For very sensitive skin, start weekly and build to biweekly if tolerated. Always follow with SPF the next morning; even PHA increases photosensitivity slightly.
Alternative: as a leave-on treatment, apply a thin layer and leave overnight. Skip other actives that night.
AHA (glycolic, lactic) for normal skin wanting stronger exfoliation. BHA (salicylic) for oily, acne-prone, congested skin. PHA for sensitive, reactive, or beginner skin. If you've had bad experiences with AHA stinging, PHA is the answer.
Immediate glow and smoother texture after one use. Visible tone evenness and reduced post-acne marks over 4 to 6 weeks of weekly use. Long-term texture refinement over 8 to 12 weeks.
Space them. Use PHA on non-retinol nights, or apply PHA AM and retinol PM. Stacking both the same evening can over-irritate. Start slow and monitor barrier health.
Slightly. PHA increases photosensitivity less than AHA but still requires consistent SPF the next day. This should be a non-negotiable regardless of which acid you use.
It's a leave-on acid treatment. "Peel" is loose terminology. You won't see visible peeling of skin like with a TCA or strong glycolic peel. The action is gradual cell turnover rather than visible shedding. For dramatic peel experience, this isn't the right product.
Pair with AXIS-Y Biome Resetting Cleansing Oil as the first cleanse, or the AXIS-Y Dark Spot Correcting Glow Serum for tone correction.
