Don Cherry
Description:
Free jazz pioneer and legendary trumpet and cornet player Don Cherry is pleased to announce the reissue on 12" vinyl and CD of his previously unreleased Cherry Jam, recorded in 1965 for Danish National Radio and released as a Record Store Day 2020 exclusive. The album is now being reissued on 12" vinyl and CD. Don Cherry is also known for his work with Ornette Coleman. In 1965, Cherry played at the popular Café Montmartre in Copenhagen, where he recorded this session with Archie Schepp in 1963. was a musically fruitful year for Cherry, as he released his signature Blue Note work, "Complete Communion," and participated in the "George Russell Sextet at Beethoven Hall. At the same time, Cherry Jam was recorded on Danish national radio with local Danish musicians. Cherry and pianist Atri Bjørn had been performing together regularly in the form of jam sessions, which led to Danish Radio's decision to record the sessions and share them with the Danish public. The musicians were all from the Copenhagen jazz scene, with tenor saxophonist Moens Bollerup, bassist Benny Nielsen, and drummer Simon Koppel rounding out the lineup. The lineup of Danish musicians at this time, however, was not heard after the first broadcast date. It is also surprising that three of the songs, with the exception of the soulful ballad "You Took Advantage of Me" by Richard Rodgers, are previously unreleased Cherry compositions. Don Cherry's insatiable curiosity about other cultures, his unconventional free thinking, and his rejection of musical constraints have paved the way for future creators in a wide range of genres beyond jazz and world music.
