[The complete story of the first recording by Kempe & the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded in just six days in May 1968. This SA-CD release contains all of the four LPs of valuable sound recordings made by Rudolf Kempe (1910-76), one of the greatest German conductors of the second half of the 20th century, with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in January 1967, after he became General Music Director of the Philharmonic, for the first time on CBS. Kempe brought the Philharmonic, which had been treated as a local orchestra despite its history, into its first golden age after World War II, and laid the groundwork for the worldwide fame it would achieve in the subsequent Celibidacke era. The warm, southern-German sound produced by the firm sound of the opposing string parts has been familiar all over the world since the LP era. The fact that these recordings are Kempe's only recordings other than Strauss' "Metamorphosen" also adds to their significance.
