Description:
Joseph Marx received musical instruction from his mother at an early age and began composing music during his time at the Guinasium. Although he temporarily turned away from music to pursue his studies, he decided to become a composer again at the age of 26 and produced a variety of orchestral and chamber music works during his lifetime. Among his works are almost 150 songs, most of which were written in his 20s, when he once again aspired to become a composer. Although Marx would later be influenced by Impressionism, most of the songs clearly show the influence of German Romanticism in the style of Richard Strauss, and a few songs have an Italianate feel, which he admired. The album also includes his own orchestral versions of the songs, which he arranged himself as needed, but which, although frequently performed by his contemporaries, have long since been forgotten.
