ALESSANDRO DELJAVAN
Description:
This is the third collection of works by Ravel (1875-1937) by the highly acclaimed Slatkin & Lyon Orchestra. The main work in this collection is "Pictures at an Exhibition," but it also includes other rare works. Pictures at an Exhibition" is one of Slatkin's specialties, as a compilation of rare arrangements by 20th century composers (8.570716) as well as a recording of Ravel's version with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra exists. This time, the Lyon Orchestra's specifications are utilized to the utmost, and a fashionable, colorful, and lively world is depicted (Slatkin's arrangement of the fifth "Promenade," which Ravel deleted, is placed in the orchestra's recording). Also, the arrangements from Chabrier's "Gorgeous Menuetto" and Schumann's "Carnival" were commissioned by Diaghilev, but these are rarely heard today. But the arrangements are stunning, and the notes seem to dance before your very eyes.Debussy's work was commissioned and arranged by Jean Jobert, a newly established publisher after the composer's death, and is also given a lively, polarized sound.
