Description:

Discovered! Rare recordings of Harold Land, one of the most famous tenor saxophonists on the West Coast, from the 1960s! Recorded live at Seattle's "Penthouse" with Carmel Jones (tp), Hampton Hawes (p), Philly Joe Jones (ds)... and many more! Harold Land, who made his name in the mid-1950s as a member of the Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet, left the quintet early because he did not want to leave his home base of Los Angeles, and continued to play mainly in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Thus, he has recorded most of his leadership work on the West Coast. The Reel To Real label has released rare and previously unreleased recordings of Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Griffin - Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Etta Jones, etc. This new release is also from the West Coast, recorded at "The Penthouse" club in Seattle, Washington. The Penthouse" club in Seattle, Washington. Rand was at the height of his powers during this period, and his playing, which was stable but strongly oozed with his personality, is a masterpiece.Performances from 1962, 1964, and 1965 at the same club are included here, each with a very interesting lineup of faces, and Rand's playing is full and complete. The three 1962 recordings with Carmel Jones (tp), Buddy Montgomery (p), Monk Montgomery (b), and Jimmy Lovelace (ds) provide a vivid contrast between Jones' brilliant trumpet and Rand's calm tenor. The next two tracks, recorded in 1964, feature Hampton Hawes (p), Monk Montgomery (b), and Mel Lee (ds). The '65 session, which features four songs, is an exciting performance featuring John Huston (p), Monk Montgomery (b), and Philly Joe Jones (ds). Philly Joe's driving drums are a real draw to the ear.Rand was busy working as a sideman at this time, and his only leader album was the Imperial release "Jazz Impressions Of Folk Music," recorded in 1963 with a quintet that included Carmel Jones, John Houston, Jimmy Bond, and Mel Lee. Music" recorded in 1963 with a quintet that included Carmel Jones, John Huston, Jimmy Bond, and Mel Lee. The significance of the discovery of this performance at "The Penthouse" is immeasurable. The LP is a direct re-mastering from the original tapes owned by the club, and comes in a 2LP set. Mastered by Kevin Gray, the 180g weight vinyl is limited to 1,500 sets worldwide. Full instruction manual! It is filled with rare photos, essays by Michael Cascuna and co-producers Zev Feldman and Corey Weese, and interviews with Joe Lovano and Sonny Rollins (!!!). The book also includes interviews with Joe Lovano and Sonny Rollins (!).Post-punk band formed in Bristol, UK in 2012. The first "Welcome EP" was released the same year, followed by the second EP "Meat" and a collection of remixes of their previous work "Meta" in 2015. In November of the following year, the band released the single "Well Done," which reached No. 1 on Spotify's viral chart. The song was also included in their debut album "Brutalism," which was released the following March 2017 in their home country, and the album received high acclaim, especially in the music media. The album is dedicated to frontman Joe's late mother, who is also the model for the cover photo. Their songs, including the song "Mother," whose music video has received over 300,000 views, are raw, real, and unapologetic guitar rock. They currently support The Maccabees and perform at major music festivals. With their popularity soaring, their London show sold out in a few hours. The band has been named one of the best albums of the year by many media outlets in 2017 and is expected to break out internationally.
