Description:

This is a collection of string quartets by four composers active in the Vienna Classical Period. Among them, Czerny's work on this album is the most precious one, as only the manuscript score remains, and it was finally printed in 2006. Pleyel, who was a good pupil of Haydn, later made a name for himself as a score publisher and piano maker, publishing many works including Haydn's. Werner, who was a good pupil of Haydn's, later became a great composer and piano maker. Werner was also Haydn's predecessor as court music director of the Esterházy family, and what you hear here is an overture to an oratorio, which Haydn arranged for string quartet. Naxos Japan
