Description:

A musical and technical feat 10 years in the making. Finally, Max Richter has announced the release of his new album, "Voices. The inspiration for this work was the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At its core is a worldview of a global community, born out of Richter's desire to unite audiences around the world, a desire that has guided his music as an "activism" throughout his career. At a time when the world is undergoing dramatic change, "Voices" delivers a message of hope through music. Max Richter invited people from around the world to participate in a crowdsourced reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The music was combined with an "Upside Down" orchestra. Hundreds of submissions were received in over 70 languages. The music flows through the "auditory landscape" created by these readings. The title "Voices" is exactly what they are about. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 to address critical post-World War II world issues, was drafted by a group of philosophers, artists, and thinkers headed by Eleanor Roosevelt. In VOICES, Richter's attempt to integrate the music with the preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, recorded in 1949. At the beginning of the piece, we hear Roosevelt's own voice. Alongside Roosevelt and the crowd-sourced "voices of the people," American actress Kiki Layne ("If Beale Street Could Talk") provides narration to complement the choral, orchestral, and electronic soundscape.
