330 P3/4 chassis #0846

In 1966, Ferrari introduced the new P3 model as their main challenger in the prototype sports car class. Three chassis were constructed, two were the coupé or berlinetta variants and the third, a spyder - #0846GT. 

For the ’67 season, the P4 became the main contender. The three P3s were converted to P4 specifications, designated by the factory as 412Ps, but P3/4s to everyone else. Additionally, Ferrari constructed two new 412P chassis from ‘spare’ components left over from ’66, plus three of the new P4 chassis were built, two in spyder form and one berlinetta.

The car illustrated is the P3 spyder from 1966, upgraded to ’67 spec. The Ferrari factory entered two cars in the Daytona 24hrs in 1967 - one of the new P4s plus the upgraded spyder. In addition N.A.R.T. entered a 412P (P3/4) and Ecurie Francorchamps with their yellow 412P.

Ranged against the mighty Ford GT40 MkIIs, Ferrari won with a now legendary 1,2,3 finish - sweet revenge for Le Mans ’66.

The winning car, illustrated here, was the spyder driven by Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini.
