Lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA), also known as expanded clay (exclay), is a lightweight aggregate created by heating clay to approximately 1,200 °C (2,190 °F) in a rotary kiln. During heating, gases expand the clay, forming thousands of small bubbles that create a honeycomb structure.

This unique structure provides multiple benefits:

• Spaces for nutrient uptake: Nutrients are absorbed by the pellets and released gradually to plants.
• Oxygen flow to roots: Oxygen reaches plant roots effectively, which is crucial for hydroponics.

LECA pellets are approximately round or potato-shaped due to the kiln's circular movement. As a substrate, Leca is recognized globally as a leader in horticultural, agricultural, and hydroponic applications.
