Extremely rare Alexander Calder 'Swirl' jute tapestry. Swirl pattern. Made in Guatemala in 1974. Calder contributed 14 designs to be made in limited editions by weavers in Guatemala and Nicaragua from local fibers. There was an earthquake in 1972, in Nicaragua and Guatemala that killed hundreds of people and a group of artists formed a relief fund. Each artist contributed limited edition art which was sold, and the money gained was used for the earthquake victims. This piece is number 45 of 100 pieces made. This is one of those 14 designs he contributed. He adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the tapestries are in museums, universities and private collections today. Fantastic condition. Stunning coloring. CA 74 signature on bottom right. Single best example of a Calder tapestry on the market today.
