Monchiero’s Montanello Barolo is generally released one year after the other Barolo due to its different tannin profile. And the 2021 has certainly been worth the wait – it’s a superb release from a special vintage.
As it’s ‘hot off the press’ there is as yet, no Kerin O’Keefe or Walter Speller reviews for the wine.
96 Points, Tip Top Tipple – Gary Walsh (The Wine Front) – “Strawberry, raspberry, mint, hazelnut, a violet and rosy perfume. Medium-bodied, this is rather svelte and fine-boned, all the red fruits, a little blood orange, a fine ‘mineral’ feel to acidity, with a smattering of dried herb, a light dusty and chalky grip to tannin, and again discreet in that way, with a fresh red fruited finish of excellent length. So well-etched and fine, chalk dust and sweet red fruit closes it out, a little Campari twist too. A delight. Don’t mind me but the fragrance and finesse here could well be Villero, albeit at a keener price point.”
94 Points, James Suckling – “A graceful Barolo with sweet violets, wild strawberries and licorice on the nose. Firm and velvety, with a full body, good mid-palate extraction and a crisp finish. Good strawberry flavors on the aftertaste. Intended for cellaring. Try from 2026.”
