There are many accounts of Tiki.  It is recorded by some that he was the first man created by the atua (god) Tāne Mahuta, whilst other accounts claim Tiki and Hine-ahu-one as the first human pair to come to be. With such widespread acclaim, renown across Aotearoa and the Pacific nations, there seems to be consensus that humankind descends from Tiki’s lineage.

Kauhou also identifies the important role we each have as points of convergence in our whakapapa (genealogy) across the continuum of time at which past generations reflect through to future generations and vice versa. Kauhou expresses our inherent responsibility to “shape the future well.”

The overall design for this blanket is inspired by 'kahu kuri’, a cloak of native dog fur reserved only for those of esteemed rank. Various colours of fur were often arranged in a checkered structure reflecting the mumu pattern, traditionally identifying tribal connections and intermarriages, acknowledging the formation of our unique fingerprint found in whakapapa.

The ‘awe’ or long tassel edges are an ode to the long tasseled hair of the kuri, a symbol of strength of character and leadership. This design also features stylised tāniko (hand embroidered) decorative borders portraying an aronui pattern, that conveys our relationship and connection with the natural world. Each motif speaks to the essence of our design story.

This blanket is woven with 100% New Zealand Lambswool.  Featuring a blanket stitch edging, it has been milled and raised to achieve a soft and smooth feel.

The yarn colours used are Earth, Sand and Clay.  The design also features a reversible contrasting colour way.
