In this painting, Tom Gilleon draws on the powerful symbolism of bulls and bears as understood by Plains tribes—symbols that differ greatly from their modern association with the stock market. Each war shield depicted within the nine squares features either a bull or bear, representing two essential elements of Native life: sustenance and strength. The bison provided vital meat and hides necessary for survival, while the bear embodied fierce courage, inspiring warriors in battle.
