ABOUT THE IMAGE: This rare preliminary storyboard print was used during the production of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983). It depicts an early version of the Rancor pit sequence. The drawings' varied sizes indicate that these storyboards were more of an elaborate "thumbnail" pass to lay out ideas and action. As a result, they were also never cut from the page and mounted on backing sheets like other VFX Storyboards from the film. 

The artist of these drawings, George Jenson, had a life-long career as a production illustrator, VFX director, and story artist. He received an Oscar nomination for "Best Visual Effects" on 2010: The Year We Make Contact, the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
