Gong 18 — 27 Inch Hand-Hammered Nepali Temple Gong One of a Kind

Nepali temple gongs are hand-hammered in the Kathmandu Valley by bronze craftsmen specialists.

This one is 27 inches across, hammered from a bronze in the bell-metal family, patinated dark, and finished with a full iconography that is unique to this one gong.

The central feature of this gong is a sun, moon, and lotus mandala.

A flower-of-life style geometric circle sits at the center, surrounded by layered lotus petals. Around the petals is a ring of crescent moons and small stars or dots, with a larger pointed lotus frame around the whole central disc.

The outer field continues the moon, floral, and vine ornament in concentric bands.

The tone here is a deep G2 held as the dominant voice, with G#3 and D#4 partials above it that add a bright, ringing shimmer to the front of the strike.

Played with a soft mallet it opens with more upper activity than some of the darker bass gongs, then gradually settles as the higher partials fall away and the G2 becomes the lasting body.

The character is lunar and bright at the edge but grounded underneath, with the low G2 keeping the sound anchored while the upper partials move around it.

Playing will favor a single clean strike and a careful roll that brings out the moon-ring shimmer without losing the low center. It sounds like a different instrument depending on how you choose to play it.
